Imaginary Friends or Spirit Guides?
I’m often asked whether children’s imaginary friends are real. In most cases, I believe the answer is yes.
Young children are incredibly open to the spirit world. They haven’t yet developed the filters of doubt, judgment, or skepticism that tend to come with age. Instead, they experience what’s around them in a very direct and present way. Because of that openness, it’s not unusual for them to sense and interact with spirit guides, guardian angels, or other supportive energies.
When I do readings, I often notice that babies, young children, and even pets are the first to respond to spiritual presence. They’ll look, react, or engage in ways that make it clear they’re aware of something others may not perceive.
I had my own experience with this as a child. I had an imaginary friend named Debbie who felt completely real to me. Over time, I grew out of that connection, but years later—when I reconnected with my spirituality—she came back through meditation and revealed herself as one of my guides.
If your child is talking to an imaginary friend, I encourage you not to dismiss it. Instead, get curious. Ask questions. Create a safe and open space for them to share. You may be surprised by what they tell you—and what it opens up for you as well.
